Less is Moore – creating an easier route to understanding data flow

“It can’t continue forever,” so said Gordon Moore five years ago when asked for a comment about the law to which he gave his name.
Moore’s Law was originally based on an observation that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since the integrated circuit had been invented.
He suggested that this doubling would continue and has proved pretty much correct although the focus has moved to data density which it has been said, doubles approximately every 18 months.
Think for a moment about old systems that are never put out to pasture but hang around building layer upon layer – payroll, accounts, inventory systems, and so on – and all impossible to test in isolation.
Each inter-related system adds complexity and present an enormous challenge when it comes to establishing just how your data flows, or should flow from system to system. Creating an easier route to understanding the flow in advance of testing will become essential as time moves on, for as the venerable Mr Moore says, it can’t continue forever.
